The Trem do Corcovado extends its condolences to the family of security guard Jorge Alex Alves Duarte, 54, who died on Sunday morning (the 16th) while climbing the steps of Christ the Redeemer. The local first-aid team responded immediately, including the use of a defibrillator, but despite how quickly they acted, the visitor suffered a fatal heart attack that made it impossible to save him, as also confirmed by the SAMU emergency team.

The first-aid station serves every visitor who comes to the Christ the Redeemer monument, including those who arrive by van or on foot. In 2024, nearly 3 million people passed through without any incident.

The station is equipped with everything needed for first aid, including a defibrillator, and staffed by trained professionals who are qualified and certified to operate it. Should a more serious situation arise, the tourist is taken to Hospital Adventista Silvestre, four minutes from the monument, within the Corcovado Complex itself.

“On Sunday there was a tragic event. The tourist suffered a fatal heart attack and, despite receiving prompt care, passed away before we could get him to Hospital Silvestre. The rescuers even used the defibrillator, without success,” says the president of the Trem do Corcovado, Sávio Neves.

The Trem do Corcovado has been operating for 140 years, and its operation is recognized as one of excellence among tourist attractions worldwide, ensuring safety and quality for its passengers.
