The most famous tourist attraction and postcard of Rio de Janeiro and of Brazil sits in the south zone of the city, in the Cosme Velho neighborhood. Atop the 710 meters of the Corcovado hill stands the Christ the Redeemer Monument! A reinforced-concrete statue clad in soapstone, 38 meters tall, on a panoramic overlook that reveals much of the city in a breathtaking view.

You can get there on a special tourist train, official vans, or by walking the trail that begins at Parque Lage. Other vehicles, including taxis, tourist transport and private cars, are not authorized on the final 2 km leading to the statue, and must stop where the ticket office and the monument’s first entrance are located. The Trem do Corcovado, inaugurated in 1884, departs from Cosme Velho and travels 3.82 km through greenery and natural viewpoints on a journey of about 20 minutes. The official vans depart from easily accessible spots such as Copacabana (Praça do Lido) and Largo do Machado, where transport options like buses and the metro are plentiful. A third departure point is at Paineiras, where the ticket office and the future visitor center are also located.

The carioca postcard had its cornerstone laid in 1922 and was inaugurated on October 12, 1931. In 2007, it was elected one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.
